Crafting Begins with the Kutti

The first step in crafting a traditional Chenda is selecting the wooden log, known as kutti, which forms the cylindrical body of the instrument. Woods like Jackfruit (Plavu) and Mahogany, which have fewer pores, are typically preferred. Among them, only the densest and most seasoned logs are chosen for durability and resonance.

Vattam Making: Stretching Tradition

The next stage is the making of the drumheads (vattam). The hide, usually from animals like bulls, cows, or buffaloes, is thoroughly stretched and sun-dried. The thicker lower skin is then pulled and tightly fixed onto bamboo hoops to form the drumheads. This process is done using a natural adhesive called Pananchi, a traditional paste.

The Union of Kutti and Vattam

A Chenda is formed by combining the kutti (body) and the vattam (drumheads). Once the heads are
placed on both sides of the kutti, they are bound tightly with rope, ensuring an airtight seal to prevent any air passage
and enhance the sound quality.

Understanding the Two Faces of the Chenda

There are two main types of Chenda based on the side used: the Edamthala Chenda (left head) and the Valamthala Chenda (right head). The Edamthala is thinner, producing sharper tones, while the Valamthala is thicker and deeper in sound. In the Valamthala Chenda, the outer portion is thinner and the inner bottom thicker, helping create its signature low-pitched, resonant tone.
